Ms. Kolder had been waiting for Marta to get back from class.

“Good! You’re here. I need help.”

“Okay. Do I have time to—”

“I have a student upstairs. You take the class in the basement.”

Take the class? What does that mean? Marta thought. “You mean teach?” she said out loud.

“No time to waste.”

This wasn’t right. Marta wasn’t a teacher. She was only supposed to assist. “What do I do?”

“Show them how to finger paint. You’ll be fine. Just try not to bother me.”

Finger paint? Isn’t that what little kids did? On her way to the basement, she heard shrieks and giggles. At the bottom of the steps, she froze. Little kids were running around the room. They were totally out of control.

This was her signal to run. But she could hear her mom’s voice. You never finish what you start. Her dad would say to be responsible.

She stayed.
